There’s nothing quite like the feeling of having a new car, with its shiny paintwork and pristine interiors. As soon as you turn the key in the ignition and take in the smell of the leather seats and polished dashboard, you probably vow to yourself to always keep the car in tip top condition.
However, this is easier said than done, and as soon as you get it off the drive, it is at risk of being damaged by loose stone chips and potholes, or tarnished with bird droppings.
So, if you want to keep your vehicle’s paintwork looking as shiny and new as the day you got it, here are some great tips.
Paint protection film
Paint Protection Film (PPF) is the most effective way to ensure the paintwork remains in good condition.
It is a polyurethane film that covers the vehicle entirely to ensure any environmental or road damage is not caused to the car.
Thanks to being transparent, it allows the paintwork to shine through. So, car owners who have elaborate designs on their motor do not have to hide this away under the protective cover.
In fact, PPF is even more important to use for drivers with intricate paintwork, as it is much harder to amend a chip in the design than if it is all one colour.
Even if the damage is quite substantial, such as exposure to acid rain or scratches from tree branches, PPF is able to protect the vehicle’s paintwork. Not only is it highly durable, but it has the ability to heal itself.
Simply washing it in warm water triggers its ‘healing’ capability, enabling it to continue shielding the car’s design from damage in the future.
Additionally, PPF is stain resistant, so as well as making sure the paintwork does not endure physical damage, it also protects it from air pollution, road debris or bird faeces.
As they typically last between seven and 12 years, PPF is a worthwhile investment for motorists who want to keep their paintwork looking brand new.
Cover up
Using a car cover is a quick and simple way of limiting the amount of damage or staining to your vehicle’s paintwork.
Although it cannot protect the car when on the move, it, at least, can make sure it is safe from bird droppings, dust, and harsh weather conditions when it is parked.
It is important to make sure it fits well, however, so it can properly act as a barrier to the elements.
Alternatively, try to park inside when you can to reduce the amount of snow, ice and dirt your vehicle is exposed to.
Wash your car often
Leaving dirt, mud, sand and road salt on your car can cause the paintwork to deteriorate over time, which is why it is important to wash it frequently.
However, make sure you wash it properly, first by rinsing off the debris and then by using an automotive cleanser to clean it, before rinsing it again, and use a soft sponge that will not scratch the paintwork.
It is also important to dry it thoroughly and not leave it to dry by itself, as this will ensure any residual chemicals have properly been removed, which could cause fading.
